Washing Machine Repair in Coimbatore: Common Problems & Maintenance Tips

Washing machines fail in fairly predictable ways, and a surprising number of call-outs turn out to be a clogged filter, a kinked hose or an unbalanced load. Knowing which symptoms you can resolve yourself — and which ones mean it is time for professional washing machine repair in Coimbatore — saves both time and unnecessary spend. This guide covers top load and front load machines, semi-automatic and fully automatic.
Washing machine not starting
When nothing happens at all, work through the supply chain first. Confirm the socket is live, the plug is fully seated, and any stabiliser in the line is working. Fully automatic machines will also refuse to start if the door or lid is not properly latched, if a child lock is active, or if the machine is still holding a paused cycle from earlier. Many models need the programme dial returned to the off position before a new cycle can be selected.
If the panel lights up but the cycle never begins, the machine may be waiting for water. Check that both taps are open and that the inlet hose is not kinked behind the unit. When power, door and water are all confirmed and the machine still does nothing, the likely causes are the door lock assembly, the control board or the mains filter — all technician territory.
Washing machine not spinning
A machine that washes but will not spin is usually protecting itself. Most fully automatic washers refuse to spin if the load is unbalanced — a single heavy bedsheet or a bunched towel on one side — or if water has not fully drained. Redistribute the load by hand, close the door and restart the spin cycle before assuming a fault.
If the drum will not spin even with a small, evenly spread load, the fault may be a worn drive belt, a failing motor or carbon brushes, a door lock that is not confirming closure, or a drain problem that keeps the water level sensor high. In semi-automatic machines a spin tub that hums but does not turn often points to a seized bearing or a failed capacitor.
Water not draining
Drainage complaints are the most common washing machine problem we see, and also the most frequently self-fixable. Three things block drainage: the drain pump filter, the drain hose, and the household outlet the hose empties into.
Safe checks before calling anyone
- Switch the machine off at the socket before touching anything.
- On front load machines, open the small access flap at the bottom front, place a shallow tray and towel underneath, and clean the drain pump filter. Coins, buttons, hair and lint collect there.
- Straighten the drain hose and check for kinks or crushing where the machine sits close to the wall.
- Make sure the hose outlet is not pushed too far down into a drain, which creates a siphon, and that the drain itself is not blocked.
If the filter is clean and the hose is clear but water still sits in the drum, the drain pump itself, the pressure sensor or the control board is likely at fault.
Water leakage
Trace where the water appears. A puddle at the front of a front load machine usually means the door gasket is dirty, torn, or has a foreign object trapped in the fold — wipe the gasket after each wash and inspect it. Water at the rear points to the inlet hose connections or the drain hose joint; hose washers perish over time and are inexpensive to replace.
Water that appears from underneath the machine mid-cycle is more serious and can indicate a split tub, a failed pump seal or a cracked dispenser housing. Stop using the machine, disconnect it from power and arrange a service visit — running a leaking machine risks damage to the electronics beneath the tub.
Excess foam is another underrated cause. Using more detergent than the load needs, or using hand-wash powder in an automatic machine, can push suds out through the dispenser drawer and look exactly like a leak.
Excessive vibration
A machine that shakes hard or walks across the floor during spin is nearly always a levelling or loading issue in the first instance. Check that all four feet sit firmly on the floor and adjust the levelling feet until the cabinet does not rock when pushed at a corner. A tile floor with a slight slope, or a thin mat under the machine, is enough to cause it.
On new front load machines, transit bolts left in place — or removed bolts whose absence lets the drum swing freely — change vibration dramatically. Persistent violent shaking with a correctly levelled machine and a balanced load may indicate worn drum bearings or failed suspension dampers, both of which should be assessed before they damage the tub.
Unusual noise
- Grinding or rumbling that gets louder as the spin speeds up: drum bearing wear.
- Metallic rattle at low speed: a coin, key or underwire trapped between the drum and the tub.
- Squealing: a slipping or perished drive belt.
- Loud buzzing with no drum movement: a motor or capacitor fault.
Trapped objects can sometimes be removed through the drum paddles or the filter. Bearing, belt and motor work needs the machine opened up properly.
Machine not taking water
If the cycle starts but the drum stays dry, check the tap, the inlet hose and the small mesh filter at the hose connection on the machine. Hard water and sediment in the supply — a real issue in parts of Coimbatore — clog that mesh steadily. Cleaning it under running water restores flow in many cases. Low mains pressure and a partially closed tap produce the same symptom. If flow is good at the tap but the machine still will not fill, the inlet solenoid valve or the water level pressure sensor is the likely fault.
Door-related problems
A front load door that will not open immediately after a cycle is normal — the interlock releases after a delay, and it will not release at all while water remains in the drum. Drain the machine using the filter access or a drain programme first. A door that will not close, a broken hinge, a worn latch hook or an interlock that never confirms closure will stop the machine from starting and needs a replacement part rather than force.
Basic washing machine maintenance
- Clean the drain pump filter every one to two months.
- Wipe the door gasket and leave the door slightly open between washes so the drum dries.
- Clean the detergent drawer regularly; residue builds up and blocks the flow.
- Run an empty hot maintenance wash occasionally to clear detergent film and odour.
- Measure detergent to the load size and water hardness rather than filling by eye.
- Empty pockets before washing — coins are the single most common cause of trapped-object noise.
- Do not overload; the drum should be filled loosely, not packed.
- Close the inlet taps if the machine will be unused for a long period.
When to call a technician
Book a service visit if the machine trips the MCB, leaks from underneath, makes grinding noises during spin, fills continuously, or shows an error code that returns after a power reset. Frequently asked questions
- Why does my washing machine stop mid-cycle?
- Common causes are an unbalanced load that the machine keeps trying to redistribute, a drainage restriction that stalls the cycle, a door interlock losing confirmation, or a power supply interruption. Clean the filter and rebalance the load first; if it repeats, the pump, sensor or control board should be checked.
- How often should I clean the drain pump filter?
- Every one to two months for a household washing several loads a week, and sooner if you notice slow draining or a smell from the drum.
- Is a front load or top load machine easier to repair?
- Both are serviceable. Front load machines have more accessible drain filters and door gaskets; top load machines are simpler mechanically but can be harder to reach inside. The fault matters more than the format.
- Can hard water damage a washing machine?
- Hard water does not damage the machine immediately, but scale and sediment gradually clog the inlet mesh filter and reduce heating efficiency. Cleaning the inlet filter periodically is a simple preventive step.
