Technician repairing a refrigerator in Coimbatore

A refrigerator is the one appliance in the house that never gets switched off, and in Coimbatore's long warm season it works harder than most. When it starts behaving oddly, the symptoms usually appear gradually: milk turning a little sooner, a freezer that frosts up faster, a hum that becomes a rattle. This guide explains the faults behind those symptoms, the safe checks any homeowner can do first, and the point at which professional refrigerator repair in Coimbatore is the sensible next step.

Refrigerator not cooling

Poor cooling is the single most common complaint. Before assuming a major fault, rule out the simple causes. Check that the thermostat or temperature dial has not been nudged to a warmer setting, that the fridge is not overloaded to the point where air cannot circulate, and that nothing is blocking the internal air vents at the back of the cabinet. A fridge packed tightly after a big grocery trip will genuinely cool worse for a day or two.

Also look behind and above the unit. Most refrigerators reject heat through a condenser coil or a heat-exchange panel, and they need a gap of a few centimetres on the sides and rear. If the appliance sits flush against a wall in a warm kitchen corner, cooling performance drops. Dust on the condenser coil has the same effect and is easy to clean with the appliance unplugged and a soft brush.

If those checks change nothing, the cause is usually internal: a failing evaporator fan, a defrost system fault, a thermostat or sensor giving wrong readings, a compressor starting-relay problem, or a refrigerant leak. None of these are DIY items. Refrigerant work in particular is regulated and needs proper recovery and charging equipment.

Fridge making unusual sounds

Refrigerators are not silent. A low hum from the compressor, occasional gurgling as refrigerant moves, and a click as the thermostat cuts in and out are all normal. What is not normal is a loud buzzing, a metallic scraping, or a rattle that starts and stops with the compressor.

What the sound often points to

  • Rattling that changes when you touch the cabinet: the fridge is not level, or a drip tray or shelf is vibrating.
  • Scraping or ticking from inside the freezer: the evaporator fan blade is catching on ice buildup.
  • Loud buzzing from the rear base: a condenser fan obstruction or a failing compressor mount.
  • A repeated click every few minutes with no cooling: the compressor is trying to start and cutting out on overload.

Levelling and clearing a rattling tray are safe to try. Anything involving the fan, compressor or start relay should be left to a technician.

Water leakage

Water pooling inside the fridge or on the kitchen floor is almost always a drainage issue rather than a burst pipe. During each defrost cycle, melted frost runs down a channel at the back of the fridge compartment into a drain hole, through a tube, and into a shallow tray above the compressor where it evaporates. A blocked drain hole — food particles, a sliver of packaging, or ice — pushes that water into the cabinet instead.

Clearing a visible blockage at the drain hole with warm water is reasonable. If the leak returns quickly, the drain tube may be frozen further along, the tray may be cracked, or the door may not be sealing, which brings warm humid air inside and creates far more condensate than the drain can handle.

Excessive ice formation

A thin, even layer of frost in a direct-cool freezer is expected and clears with a manual defrost. Thick ice that returns within days, or heavy ice in a frost-free model, indicates a real fault. In frost-free refrigerators the defrost heater, defrost thermostat or timer/control board may have failed, so the evaporator never clears. In any model, a worn door gasket or a door left slightly ajar lets humid air in, and that humidity freezes onto the coldest surface it finds.

Coimbatore's humidity during the monsoon months makes this worse, which is why ice complaints often cluster in the same season. Defrosting fully and drying the interior gives you a clean baseline; if heavy ice comes back within a week or two, book a service visit.

Refrigerator not turning on

If the interior light is dead and there is no compressor hum, start with the power supply. Test the socket with another appliance, check the plug top and any stabiliser in the circuit, and inspect the cord for damage. Voltage stabilisers are common in local homes and a failed stabiliser will cut supply entirely while looking perfectly normal.

If the light works but the compressor never runs, the fault is inside — typically the start relay, overload protector, thermostat or control board. That is a technician's job. Do not attempt to bypass a relay or run the compressor directly.

Door and seal problems

The door gasket is a cheap part that causes expensive symptoms. A simple test: close the door on a currency note or a strip of paper and pull. If it slides out with almost no resistance, the seal at that point is weak. Repeat around all four sides.

Gaskets harden with age and tear at the corners. Cleaning them with mild soapy water and drying them removes the sticky film that stops them sealing. If the rubber is split, deformed or permanently compressed, replacement is the fix, and it usually pays for itself in reduced running cost and less ice.

Temperature issues

Uneven temperature — freezer fine, fridge warm, or one shelf colder than another — usually means air is not being distributed properly rather than that the cooling system has failed. Blocked vents, a failing evaporator fan, or a damper/air-flow control problem are the usual culprits. For most households a fridge compartment around 3–5 °C and a freezer around −18 °C is a sensible target; a cheap fridge thermometer left inside overnight tells you far more than the numbered dial does.

When professional repair is required

Call a technician when you see any of the following, rather than continuing to troubleshoot:

  • The compressor runs constantly but the cabinet never gets cold.
  • The compressor does not start at all, or trips your MCB.
  • There is a burning smell, visible scorching or a damaged power cord.
  • Oily residue near the coils, which can indicate a refrigerant leak.
  • Heavy ice returns within days of a full defrost.
  • Water leaks persist after the drain has been cleared.

Sealed-system work, compressor replacement and control board diagnosis all need the right instruments. Our refrigerator repair and service page lists the faults we handle at home visits across Coimbatore.

Basic maintenance tips

  • Clean the condenser coil or rear panel every few months with the appliance unplugged.
  • Leave a gap of at least 5–8 cm behind and beside the cabinet for airflow.
  • Wipe the door gasket monthly and check it with the paper test.
  • Let hot food cool before putting it in, and cover liquids to reduce humidity inside.
  • Avoid overpacking; air needs a path around the shelves.
  • Defrost direct-cool freezers before frost gets thicker than about 5 mm.
  • Keep the fridge away from the cooking range and direct sunlight where possible.

When to contact SLP Electronics

If the safe checks above have not solved the problem — or if food is spoiling and you cannot wait — a home diagnosis is the fastest route. If your symptoms are more about early warning signs than an outright breakdown, our guide to the signs your refrigerator needs professional fridge service covers what to watch for. You can also reach us through the contact page to describe the fault and arrange a visit.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my refrigerator running but not cooling?
The compressor can run while cooling still fails — common causes include a blocked or dusty condenser, a failed evaporator fan, a defrost fault that has iced up the evaporator, a faulty thermostat or sensor, or loss of refrigerant. Only the airflow and cleaning checks are safe to do at home.
Is it normal for a fridge to make a clicking sound?
A single click when the thermostat switches the compressor on or off is normal. A click that repeats every few minutes without the compressor running usually indicates a start relay or overload protector problem and needs a technician.
How often should a refrigerator be serviced?
There is no fixed rule for domestic refrigerators. Cleaning the coils and checking the door seal a few times a year is usually enough; a technician visit is warranted when performance changes rather than on a schedule.
Should I repair or replace an old refrigerator?
It depends on the fault and the age of the unit. Gasket, fan, thermostat and drainage repairs are usually worth doing. When a very old refrigerator needs sealed-system or compressor work, it is fair to compare the repair cost against a new, more efficient model before deciding.
